Moss rose, a resilient little plant that is tolerant of both heat and drought, is one of the products offered by Outsidepride Seed Source. This moss rose, known as Portulaca Grandiflora Happy Trails Mix, is an excellent garden performer for hot, dry, full sun conditions, nearly glowing on top of the green, succulent foliage. Moss rose works well as a ground cover plant, growing 6 - 9 inches tall and spreading 14 - 18 inches in width, filling in those areas of the garden that are troublesome. This moss rose mix thrives in sunny hot locations where the soil is poor, producing lots of flowers with semi-double blooms in intense, vivid colors. Moss rose plants benefit from being cut back during the summer, helping to extend their blooms into the fall and keeping them neat.
To grow moss rose, the seeds should be sown in starter trays or individual pots 6 - 8 weeks before the end of the frost season, pressing them into the soil without covering them, as the ground cover seed needs light to germinate. The seedlings can then be transplanted into the garden 12 inches apart. Alternatively, Portulaca seeds can be directly sown in prepared soil outdoors after all danger of frost. Moss rose plants tolerate heat and drought, but they do look best with occasional watering. Approximately 1,000 Moss Rose seeds cover 20 square feet, and the plant is an annual flowering ground cover that grows in USDA Zones 4 - 11, thriving in full sun and well-drained, dry soil with a pH of 6.1 - 7.5.
